Sustainability & Responsible Tourism policy

1. Purpose and commitment

Shah Tours and Travels Ltd ("Shah Tours", "we", "us" or "our") is a Tanzanian tour operator committed to conducting business responsibly, ethically and sustainably. We seek to create lasting value for our guests, employees, mountain crews, local communities, suppliers and Tanzania's natural and cultural heritage.
Tourism can support conservation, decent work, local enterprise and cultural understanding when it is carefully managed. We therefore consider environmental, social, economic, safety and governance impacts when planning and delivering our services.

2. Scope and governance

This policy applies to our directors, employees, guides, drivers, porters, cooks, contractors and other persons acting on our behalf. We also communicate relevant expectations to accommodation providers, activity operators and other suppliers.
• Management is responsible for providing leadership and appropriate resources for implementation.
• A designated sustainability coordinator monitors implementation, objectives and improvement actions.
• Employees must follow this policy, report environmental, safety or ethical concerns and support continuous improvement.
• We review this policy at least annually and when material legal, operational or industry changes occur.

3. Legal and ethical compliance

We comply with applicable Tanzanian laws, regulations, permits and authority rules governing tourism, protected areas, wildlife, environmental management, employment, occupational health and safety, road transport, public health, cultural heritage, anti-corruption and personal data protection. Our operations in protected areas follow the requirements of the relevant authorities, including Tanzania National Parks, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority and the Tanzania Wildlife Management Authority, as applicable.

Where this policy sets a higher operational standard than the legal minimum, we aim to follow the higher standard where reasonably practicable.

4. People, human rights and decent work

Our employees and field crews are central to the quality and safety of every journey. We aim to maintain a safe, inclusive and respectful workplace in accordance with applicable Tanzanian employment and labour laws.
• Provide clear employment terms and lawful remuneration, leave and statutory benefits.
• Promote equal opportunity and prohibit discrimination, harassment, intimidation and violence.
• Prohibit forced labour, child labour, human trafficking, exploitation, bribery and corruption.
• Respect lawful freedom of association and fair employment procedures.
• Provide appropriate training, supervision, first-aid arrangements, emergency procedures and protective equipment.
• Support staff development through induction, refresher training, mentoring and professional growth opportunities.

Mountain crew welfare
For mountain operations, we promote responsible porter welfare through fair and timely pay, appropriate equipment, load limits, adequate food and shelter, safe working practices, respectful treatment and access to appropriate support. We participate in recognised industry monitoring and improvement initiatives where applicable.

5. Child safeguarding

We maintain zero tolerance for child abuse, exploitation and trafficking. Employees and suppliers must behave appropriately around children and report reasonable concerns through the proper channels. We may suspend or terminate a business relationship where a supplier fails to take appropriate safeguarding action. Suspected criminal conduct will be reported to the relevant authorities in accordance with Tanzanian law.

6. Environmental management

Waste and materials
• Prevent waste where possible and promote reuse, recycling and responsible disposal.
• Reduce single-use plastics and select reusable, durable or recyclable alternatives where practical.
• Avoid littering and remove operational waste from natural areas in accordance with authority rules.
• Prefer products with minimal packaging and responsible end-of-life options.

Energy, fuel and emissions
• Use energy-efficient lighting and equipment and encourage responsible electricity use.
• Maintain vehicles preventively to support safety, fuel efficiency and lower emissions.
• Plan routes and transfers efficiently, reduce unnecessary idling and use shared transport where suitable.
• Assess lower-emission technologies and renewable-energy opportunities as they become operationally and financially feasible.

Water and wastewater
• Use water efficiently and prevent avoidable wastage.
• Protect rivers, lakes, springs and other water sources during activities.
• Encourage accommodation and service partners to manage water and wastewater responsibly and lawfully.

• Follow protected-area rules, designated roads and trails, speed limits, viewing distances and guide instructions.
• Do not feed, chase, touch, bait or intentionally disturb wild animals.
• Do not support illegal wildlife trade, wildlife cruelty or activities that damage habitats.
• Do not remove plants, rocks, fossils or natural objects unless expressly permitted by law and the relevant authority.
• Brief guests on responsible behaviour and Leave No Trace principles appropriate to the destination.
• Support conservation education and recognised conservation initiatives where practical.

8. Communities and cultural heritage

• Avoid exploitative or staged interactions that misrepresent communities or place people at risk.

9. Responsible suppliers, accommodation and purchasing

We set proportionate objectives and review relevant indicators, which may include fuel, energy and water use; waste and recycling; local purchasing and employment; staff training; porter welfare; guest feedback; supplier performance; safety performance; and community or conservation activities. Availability and methodology may vary by indicator. We do not claim outcomes that we cannot reasonably evidence.
