Day 5 - Moir Hut Camp to Lava Tower to Barranco camp
Your hike today takes you back south towards the Kibo cone steadily climbing up and over the edges of the alpine desert to your first high altitude at the lava tower (4630m or 15190ft, if you didn’t already reach here the day before). Today helps you to acclimatize and is a great indicator to see how your body can handle the higher altitude. From the Lava Tower you begin your steep descent anti clockwise around Kibo and into the Barranco Valley passing the large flowering mountain cacti (Kilimanjaro Senecios) unique to Kilimanjaro. The day ends around the same elevation as you started on the edge of the heather and moorland.

Day 6 - Barranco Camp to Karanga camp
This morning you will leave the camp and ascend the Barranco wall. This is an impressive non-technical scramble and gives a feeling of mountain climbing (without any previous experience or advanced equipment required) and is rewarded with a superb view from the top back into the camp and the Heim glacier on the peak. The remainder of the hike will be through the alpine desert slowly winding around the mountain till the Karanga valley which you descend into and again up till your camp. Karanga valley is the last water point.

Day 7 - Karanga camp to Barafu camp
Today you climb almost casually through the empty landscape of the alpine desert where you keep a slow pace even though the path is not extremely steep. Kibo cone starts to near and you may finally glimpse the Mawenzi peak (Kilimanjaro’s second peak) in the east. The short distance means you have plenty of time at your summit camp to rest and prepare for the summit attempt tonight.

Day 8 - Barafu Camp to Stella point to Uhuru peak to Mweka camp
In the early morning (around 00:00am) you begin your final ascent to the summit of Uhuru peak through the arctic zone. The trek is a steep hike over loose volcanic scree through the dark and cold night and takes a slow pace in a zig-zag pattern towards Stella point (5685m or 18650ft) which is your first stop on the Kibo crater rim. From here a short (but difficult) hike remains to take you to Uhuru Peak (5895m or 19341ft), the highest point in Africa. You usually don’t spend that long at the peak due to the extreme altitude and will descend back down to the base camp for your breakfast / brunch. After your gear is packed up you continue the descent through the alpine desert, heather and moorland and eventually stopping at Mweka camp in the rain forest zone for a well-deserved rest.

Some call this a 'Lemosho high altitude drop off' route however we call this the 'Shira' route. The Shira / Lemosho high altitude drop off is not a recommended option (due to it's high altitude start that isn't suitable for hikers who are not already acclimatized). You can find the itinerary here: Shira route (Lemosho High altitude drop-off)

Frequently Asked Questions about Kilimanjaro trek via Lemosho route
Frequently asked questions about this route
Lemosho Route Difficulty and Climber Suitability
The Lemosho Route is moderately challenging, suitable for fit beginners and experienced trekkers. Its longer duration and gradual ascent help with acclimatization, improving summit success rates. Climbers face varied terrain and some steep sections, such as the Barranco Wall, but no technical climbing is required. Shah Tours provides expert guides, health monitoring, and acclimatization support to make your climb safer and more enjoyable.
Beginner-Friendly Kilimanjaro Trekking Experience
Yes, the Lemosho Route is one of the best options for beginners due to its longer itinerary and gentle ascent profile. An 8-day trek offers excellent acclimatization and higher summit success. While no technical skills are required, Shah Tours recommends good physical preparation, mental readiness, and following your guide’s pace. Our professional team ensures you’re supported every step of the way.
Health restrictions for Kilimanjaro climbers
Those with serious medical conditions such as heart disease, severe asthma, or uncontrolled diabetes should avoid climbing Kilimanjaro. Pregnant women and individuals highly prone to altitude sickness should also consider alternative travel options. Always consult a medical professional before booking. Shah Tours prioritizes client safety, with detailed health screenings and advice before and during the trek to reduce health risks.
Trek Duration and Recommended Itinerary
The Lemosho Route typically takes 7–9 days. Shah Tours recommends the 8-day itinerary for the best balance between acclimatization and trekking comfort. The extra day helps your body adapt to the altitude, boosting your summit chances. Longer treks also allow more time to enjoy the diverse landscapes, wildlife encounters, and panoramic views that make Lemosho one of Kilimanjaro’s most scenic routes.
Best Season to Climb Lemosho Route
The best times are January - March and June - October, offering clearer skies, stable weather, and better trail conditions. January - March is quieter with fewer trekkers, while June - October is busier but equally rewarding. Kilimanjaro’s weather is unpredictable, so Shah Tours ensures you’re equipped for all conditions, from tropical rain in the rainforest zone to freezing summit temperatures.
Lemosho Route Climbing Costs and Inclusions
A Lemosho Route climb with Shah Tours costs from USD $2,500 - $4,000 per person, depending on trek length, group size, and inclusions. The price covers park fees, professional guides, certified porters, quality tents, meals, and transfers. Not included are flights, visas, tips, and personal gear rental. Booking with Shah Tours ensures ethical porter treatment, safety standards, and over 40 years of Kilimanjaro expertise.
Lemosho Route vs Machame Route Comparison
Lemosho is longer, quieter at the start, and offers gentler altitude gain than Machame, improving acclimatization. Both merge at Shira Plateau and follow the same summit path via the Southern Circuit. Machame is shorter and more popular, often busier. Shah Tours recommends Lemosho for those seeking scenic variety, fewer crowds, and the best balance of challenge, comfort, and success rates.
Climb Kilimanjaro to Uhuru Peak
Expect a challenging but rewarding experience. You'll encounter diverse terrains, from rain forests to arctic conditions. Acclimatization days are essential, and you should be prepared for long trekking hours, basic camping conditions, and altitude-related challenges.
Altitude Profile and Acclimatization Strategy
The Lemosho Route begins at 2,100 m (6,890 ft) and ascends to Uhuru Peak at 5,895 m (19,341 ft). Gradual elevation gain is key to acclimatization, with key camps at Shira Plateau, Barranco, and Karanga. Shah Tours incorporates strategically planned acclimatization days to minimize altitude sickness and maximize summit success. Oxygen and health checks are provided throughout the climb.
Essential Packing List for lemosho route
Essential items include sturdy hiking boots, layered clothing, a four-season sleeping bag, rain gear, trekking poles, and headlamp. Shah Tours supplies quality tents, dining shelters, and basic camping gear, with options to rent sleeping bags and down jackets. We provide a detailed packing list to help you prepare efficiently, ensuring comfort across Kilimanjaro’s varied climate zones from rainforest to arctic summit.
Reason for Nighttime Summit Attempts
The climb to Uhuru Peak usually starts at midnight to reach the summit by sunrise. Night climbing offers firmer ground, cooler temperatures, and breathtaking dawn views. Descending in daylight is safer and brings trekkers quickly to lower, oxygen-rich altitudes. Shah Tours follows this schedule to enhance safety, acclimatization, and the unforgettable experience of standing on Africa’s highest point at sunrise.

My group of five colleagues and I climbed Kilimanjaro via the seven-day Machame Route with Shah Tours. Communication with Ramon before and after the climb was seamless and extremely professional. All questions were answered quickly and promptly. Even a glove I forgot in my rental luggage was later delivered to my hotel in Arusha by our guide. Our guides, Baraka, Hillary, and Felix, were excellent mountain guides who provided outstanding support throughout the tour and kept our spirits up even during the most challenging moments. The food during the climb was always freshly prepared. We usually had soup as a starter, followed by either a stew with rice or noodles, or, for example, potatoes with fried fish or meat. A delicious pizza was served the evening before the summit attempt. I would also like to commend the rest of the crew for their consistently positive attitude and courteous service. The rental equipment was of good quality. However, on a future tour, I would opt for better sleeping mats, as the standard ones became quite thin after a while. Overall, it was a great experience to do the climb with Shah Tours.

Kilimandscharo It was the best experience we have ever had with Shah Tours. We always felt completely comfortable and well taken care of. The guides, porters, and cook were incredibly kind and friendly. They always greeted us with a smile and even sang for us. Even at 4,700 meters above sea level, they baked us a cake because it was our wedding anniversary. That was such a special and unforgettable gesture. I can honestly say that this was one of the most amazing experiences of our lives, and we would recommend Shah Tours to anyone without hesitation! Thank you all and best wishes to Mathayo, Felix and the Team! We miss you guys.

7-Day Kilimanjaro Machame circuit climb Our Kilimanjaro trek via the 7-day Machame Route was an unforgettable experience from start to finish. The admission fee for our group of 12 was included in the tour package. The route itself was breathtaking, with incredible scenery that changed every day—from lush rainforest and dramatic valleys to rocky alpine landscapes and the spectacular summit views above the clouds. What truly made the trip exceptional was the professionalism and kindness of the Shah Tour and guides with special mention of Matheyo. The Matheyo and team was organized, supportive, and attentive throughout the hike. Our guides set a steady, comfortable pace, constantly checked on everyone’s wellbeing, and shared valuable encouragement and knowledge about the mountain. Their experience and calm leadership gave us confidence, especially on the more challenging summit night. The porters and camp crew also deserve enormous appreciation. They worked incredibly hard to make sure we were comfortable, well fed, and prepared each day. The meals were delicious and surprisingly varied for a mountain trek, and the camps were always ready when we arrived. Reaching Uhuru Peak was one of the proudest moments of our lives, and we could not have done it without this amazing team. We highly recommend this company to anyone planning to climb Kilimanjaro on the Machame Route. Their care, expertise, and genuine commitment to their guests made this adventure truly special.

Pole pole to the roof of africa with Shah, was great. When deciding which company to book for our Kilimanjaro and Safari trip in Tanzanie we have been in contact with several companies. We wanted to do the private tour as a couple. We had 9 full days to organize. Firstly we thought we will do 7 days and 2 days safari (Tarangire and Ngorngoro). Nevertheless, as our priority was Kilimanjaro we selected 8 days Lemosho route to increase our chances to reach the top. This left only 1 day for safari first. I was trying to discuss with companies the options to go faster If we feel well and then possibly have time to do both national Parks of Tarangire and Ngorongoro. Shah Tours tourned out to be the only very flexible operator to offer this option of shortening the trip If everything goes well. So, on the day 6, when arriving to Kosovo camp from Karaga camp, we asked If we could proceed with our summit on the same day, they did not hesitate to support us. During the whole trip the guides (Innocent and Leon) and the porters shared very positive energy and support. A Lot of dancing, laughter and happy faces even in hard moments. Finally, thanks to all that, we manager to finish our hike in 7 days instead of 8 and had enough time to include another day of safari in our itinerary. No planning, no phone calls, no waiting. Shah was monitoring our progress and once the office received the message we are descending on day 7, everything was organized (additional accomodation and guide for safari, food and transport). We had amazing time in tanzanie, Thank you Shah Tours for your work and efforts in making our trip unforgetable.

Kilimanjaro I climbed Mount Kilimanjaro with Joker as the main tour operator and Shah Tours as the local partner. It was truly an unforgettable experience, thanks to the amazing team that supported us throughout the entire trek. Our head guide, Calvin, and our second guide, August, were both incredibly experienced, professional, and motivating. Their knowledge and guidance made me feel safe and confident every step of the way. They did everything they could to help us reach the summit safely and successfully. The entire crew, including the porters and cooks, was outstanding. After seven days together on the mountain, they felt like a second family. Their kindness, encouragement, and dedication made this challenging adventure even more special and memorable. I highly recommend Joker and Shah Tours to anyone planning to climb Mount Kilimanjaro.
