Ngorongoro Highlands Trekking
One of our favourite places in Tanzania to walk around, the Ngorongoro highlands offer unique off the beaten track walks, wildlife encounters, cracks in the earths crust, towering mountain and crater scenery which cannot be compared with anywhere else in the world. Combined with the fact that these are quiet areas with mainly the local Maasai inhabitants who coexist with wildlife in harmony and close to the Northern safari circuit, make this must visit place for adventure travellers.
The highland area is usually quiet, even in the busy seasons where most choose to skip these off the beaten track experiences and stay on the usual safari circuit. You can add anything from a half day walk around Olmoti / Empakai craters to multi day Maasailand hikes through the Rift Valley reaching Lake Natron area on the foothills of Mount Oldoinyo Lengai (Maasai for 'mountain of god'). From here you can drive back to access domestic / international flights around Arusha or combine with a visit to Serengeti National Park for wildlife viewing.
