There are three main international airports in Tanzania as described below. Most tourists usualy fly to / from Kilimanjaro International Airport when visiting Tanzania however you should always consider your full tour for the most convenient airport and whats actually available options from your origin country.

Kilimanjaro International Airport

Located in Northern Tanzania between the Kilimanjaro and Arusha Regions, Kilimanjaro International Airport is probably the most popular choice when visiting Tanzania for a Kilimanjaro climb or a wildlife safari. The airport sits between Moshi (35km) and Arusha (45km) which are both the common start / end locations for these popular African experiences. Although this is one of the most used airports in the country (and an International Airport).

Getting to / from the airport

  • Private transfers can easily be arranged to your lodge at any time of day
  • Airport shuttles are sometimes available depending on your hotel or airline
  • Taxi services are readily available at the airport after you exit the terminal
  • Pubic transport services though available (local bus) are not recommended for tourists and generally start from outside of the airport.
  • Domestic flights can connect you from other local destinations in Tanzania to Kilimanjaro International Airport.

  • Luggage: Trolleys are available near the baggage claim area and a dedicated lost and found desk is located after baggage claim.

Julius Nyerere International Airport

Located in the commercial capital on the South East coast of Tanzania, Julius Nyerere International Airport (named after the countries first president) is located in Dar Es Salaam and around 12km from the city centre. This is the largest airport in the country and a popular entry point for corporate travellers and those travelling from uncommon destinations especially from Asia and the Middle East. Generally this airport is the least popular for tourists who will primarily use the two other major international airports mentioned.

Zanzibar Abeid Amani Karume International Airport

Located on the main ‘Unguja’ island of Zanazibar, it is approximately 5km from the Stone Town city centre. This airport has gained in popularity during the last few years and is a hub for many international flights and a popular departure airport for those who combine northern Tanzania treks or safaris with a beach holiday in Zanzibar. Many international airlines do also offer flights to / from Zanzibar International Airport and can be a perfect location for a island holiday.
