Kilimanjaro Route Update: Temporary Lemosho and Londorosi Closure

Last updated: 2 October 2026

Tanzania National Parks (TANAPA) has temporarily suspended the use of the Lemosho and Londorosi routes following a fire on the western side of Mount Kilimanjaro. The notice was issued on 28 September 2026 while firefighting teams continued working in the affected area. TANAPA has advised climbers who were due to use Lemosho or Londorosi to use Machame, Marangu or Rongai instead. This is not a complete closure of Mount Kilimanjaro. Climbs are continuing on routes that remain open.

Is the Northern Circuit affected?

Although Northern Circuit is not named separately in the TANAPA notice, Shah Tours’ Northern Circuit itinerary begins through Londorosi and follows the western approach towards Shira.

For practical purposes, our Northern Circuit departures should therefore be treated as affected while access through Londorosi remains suspended.

We are monitoring the situation and will update this page when TANAPA issues further guidance or confirms that the affected routes can reopen.

What happens if I have booked Lemosho or Northern Circuit?

A temporary route closure does not necessarily mean that your Kilimanjaro trip must be cancelled.

The appropriate arrangement will depend on your departure date, the duration of your climb and the official guidance in place at the time. If western access remains closed, it may be possible to move the climb to Machame, Rongai or Marangu.

These routes are not identical. They have different starting points, itineraries and accommodation arrangements, so any change should be discussed properly rather than made automatically.

Guests who have booked through Shah Tours should contact us before changing flights, accommodation or other travel arrangements. We will review each upcoming departure against the latest park information and explain the available options.

Which Kilimanjaro routes remain available?

TANAPA’s notice directs affected climbers towards:

  • Machame Route
  • Marangu Route
  • Rongai Route

Route access can change as conditions develop. Final arrangements will always follow the instructions issued by TANAPA and Kilimanjaro National Park.

Has a reopening date been announced?

No reopening date was included in the TANAPA notice, and we do not want to speculate about when Lemosho and Londorosi will become available again.

The routes are temporarily suspended while the authorities respond to the fire. Safety remains the priority for climbers, mountain crews, park employees and the teams working in the affected area.

We will update this notice as soon as reliable new information is available.

Do I need to cancel my Kilimanjaro climb?

No. Kilimanjaro remains open, although Lemosho and Londorosi are temporarily unavailable.

Travellers booked on an affected route should speak to their operator about the available alternatives. Anyone travelling with Shah Tours can contact our team for advice based on their particular dates and itinerary.
